Elevated Coastal Living in Edmonds
Expansive windows and modern finishes created a bright coastal retreat with stunning views and accessible design suited for guests of all abilities.
Our homeowners, a retired occupational therapist and her husband, a UW horticulturalist, were planning to age in place (AIP) and engaged our design build team to help them create the primary suite they’d envisioned. This project was done with a team of Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS) and Certified Living in Place Professionals (CLIPP). Many universal standards were implemented into the project with the help of this highly educated team, including the lead carpenter/project manager, project developer, and designer.

As a medical professional, our client was familiar with Universal Design (UD) and Aging in Place (AIP) standards, which guided much of the project planning. Their existing rambler-style home offered some suitability for aging needs, but with their adult son also living in the home, a unique solution was required. To meet lifestyle and safety needs, a private and accessible primary suite addition was designed. With a fixed income in mind, our team carefully selected materials and construction methods to provide a high-quality outcome within budget, ensuring the space would support their long-term needs.
The remodel incorporated wide doorways and window placements at varying heights for accessibility from all bedroom areas, along with reframed flooring to eliminate transitions between spaces. Special adaptations included a reinforced grab bar, a larger-than-standard pocket door, and a linear floor drain for safety. Dark and cramped areas were opened up with strategic window and door placements to maximize natural light, while the bathroom was designed with a curbless shower, removable lower cabinetry, and ample clearance for mobility devices. Together, these features created a safe, functional, and welcoming suite where the clients can comfortably spend their days, nights, and years to come.
